Carrier oils are base oils (also known as fatty oils as they are derived from the fatty portions of the plant seed or nut) used to dilute essential oils and absolutes before they are applied to the skin. They are so named because they safely carry the essential oil onto the skin. Carrier oils do not contain a concentrated aroma, unlike essential oils, rather they typically have a mild distinctive smell. Nor do they evaporate like essential oils, which are more volatile and thus optimize an essential oils healing power while extending the aroma of the oil.
An aromatherapy treatment consists of 3% essential oil and 97% carrier oil, and in facial treatments that ratio falls to around 1% essential oil and 99% carrier. Carrier oils when mixed with essential oils provide some amazing benefits for your skin as a synergy is formed between the essential oils and the carrier. When blended correctly the results can be spectacular, diminishing wrinkles and bringing softness, suppleness and radiance to your skin. Some carriers even act as a sun block. Carrier oils are used in massage as a lubricant.
